SALEM (OR) - Monday, 12/19/22 - On a night when the Capitol City Classic presented by Northwestern Mutual set a single day all-time attendance record, BJ Davis of Modesto Christian (CA) decided to put on a show.
Davis, a supreme athlete who is a combination of speed and strength and who is committed to San Diego State, led the Crusaders to an OT win over a very game John Paul II (TX) team, partly through skill and partly through sheer will. With Modesto playing without injured five-star guard Jamari Phillips, Davis took things into his own hands, making 14 of 27 field goals, including 7 of 12 three point attempts, and 14 of 16 free throws in 36 sparkling minutes of play.
The 49 points scored by Davis were a CCC single game record, eclipsing the 48 scored by Drew Carter of Tigard in 2019.
6'7 junior Bryson McGlothin led JP2 with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
The Crusaders will face Oregon's top-ranked team, the West Linn Lions, in the semifinals. West Linn defeated pre-season Oregon 6A #2 Beaverton going away, 64-48. The Beavers led 28-20 at the half, but a 42-20 turnaround in the second half punched the Lions' ticket to the semis. Jackson Shelstad (21), Sam Leavitt (20) and Adrian Mosley (12) led the Lions, while Brady Rice pumped in 21 for Beaverton.
On the other side of the bracket, St. John Bosco (CA) handled Cascade, 74-44, behind a balanced attack led by sophomore reserve Jaison Joyce (15 points). West Salem got by Wilsonville, 60-53, in overtime, in a rematch of the 2021 CCC championship game. The Titans got 16 points apiece from Tommy Slack and Jimmy Lathen, and overcame an incredible three-point shot at the buzzer by Wilsonville's Kallen Gutridge to force OT. Junior post Kyle Counts led the Wildcats with 19 points and 9 rebounds.
