SALEM, OR - Wednesday, December 20, 2024 - Throughout the 2023 Capitol City Classic presented by Northwestern Mutual there were some big shots made.
Tournament MOP Tounde Yessoufou, a junior 5-star with St. Joseph's (CA), wowed the crowds with thunderous dunks and timely buckets that helped the Knights win the Johnny Leonard Trophy. Fellow 5-star recruit Drake Powell of Northwood (NC) hit pull-up jumpers and made plays for his teammates. And the dynamic backcourt duo of 5-star Meleek Thomas and 4-star Brandin Cummings thrilled the crowds at Willamette University with fast-paced play and buckets in bundles.
But the biggest shot of the '23 CCC was not made by any of the future NBA talent in the field or even any player in the tournament. Instead, the shot heard throughout the Willamette Valley was at halftime of the championship game when Salem resident Nathan Hafn calmly stepped onto the court and nailed a half-court shot much to the crowd's shock and delight.
At stake? Thanks to the generosity of long-time CCC sponsor Capitol Toyota, a brand new Toyota Camry.
"That was so fun," said CCC Assistant Tournament Director Jack Roche, "It was shocking and sent a jolt through the whole building. We're very happy for Nathan."
