The Centennial Huskies (Corona, CA) put on a show in their Capitol City Classic quarter-final game against Tigard, and it started almost immediately.
Blending a lethal combination of relentless defensive pressure, shot-making range and ability, and athletic prowess, the Huskies jumped out to a 32-11 lead after one quarter and never looked back.
Junior wing DJ Davis led the way, bombing in 6 three pointers... in the first quarter.
Davis was so hot, an attempted lob went into the bucket for three points.
It was all the more impressive because the win came against Tigard, a tough, hard-nosed and smart basketball team that is always well-prepared under longtime coach Shawn Alderman.
But on this night, Centennial lived up to the hype surrounding their national ranking (14th) and star power. Davis wound up leading the way with 25 points, while fellow guard Jaylen Clark, a 6'5 junior ranked in the top 35 in the country in the Class of 2020, chipped in 22.
Centennial ran its record to 10-2, with the only losses being to 10th-ranked Rancho Christian (by 2 points) and 4th-ranked Sierra Canyon.
The only thing standing between the Huskies and their first-ever Johnny Leonard Trophy is the Wilsonville Wildcats. Wilsonville was steady in its game against Mt. View, eventually winning 61-46. Junior wing Keegan Shivers scored 19 points to lead the Wildcats (7-0), while senior guard Jack Roche dished out 11 assists.
No Oregon team has ever won the Capitol City Classic. The Wildcats will be trying to be the first to do so in the event's fourth year.
Tigard will face Mt. View for 3rd place at 6:00pm Saturday, while Centennial and Wilsonville will square off at 7:30pm at Willamette University.
